Long Live The Queen! - Marlborough MTB Excursions

>> Monday, December 28, 2009

Yo!

Hope you are all having a nice Christmas break and getting in the odd ride. I am spending the Christmas break in Blenheim staying with my father outlaw, Geoff Palatchie. Geoff and his brothers used to be gun trackies in the 70's and had NZ Titles. He has vintage Francesco Coppi bikes in the rafters of his garage. Pity they are too small for me.

I have only been out on the bike three times, which is still a lot for a part-timer like me. I did a couple of rides in the local Wither Hills, and did the Queen Charlotte Track from Anikiwa to Punga Cove (in peak season you cannot ride to Ship Cove). Here are my brief ramblings...

I really enjoyed the QC Track. There were plenty of steep hard climbs and I had to get off a few times which I wasn't expecting. There were some good long downhills too - but you do have to watch for walkers. Highly recommended. Check out this website, which is the official track website, if you fancy planning a trip.

Check out my amateurish presentation of my day. You can right click 'watch in youtube' or click our youtube link on the top link bar as well.

I Googled for what to do for a spin whilst in Blenheim and found the website of the Marlborough MTB Club. It is not often updated, but did have a page with some route info. I also picked up a trail map at a local bike shop, a friendly Avanti Plus, who also lent me some headset spanners for my vintage steed.

There is a mountain bike park here. Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. I think the driver behind the park was to create somewhere riders would have right of way. It must be difficult around here as there would be a small pool of willing trail pixies. There is no bush or tree cover, so there is no moisture (hence 'Wither' hills!). The trails are baked hard, featureless paths. I thought I would do the trails marked as 'Extreme', including one called 'Twister'. It was far less interesting and challenging than some easy tracks at trail parks like Makara. I was lucky enough to get something in my eye, so did the descent with one eye closed, upping the interest.

There is a route called the 'Mount Vernon Traverse' which looked like a good outing with rolling climbs over mostly gravel 4WD and farm tracks. A clockwise loop of the Withers, topping out at 422m on Mount Vernon.

It was a good outing for getting great views across Blenhiem, the vineyards, and across to the Kaikoura Range to the South East, and the Richmond Forest Park to the West. The views kept the interest up, but there is no technical riding of any kind on this 19km loop. But I would do it if stuck in Blenheim for a bit. The GPS of it is here.

I only brought my vintage 1990 Nishiki Ariel down with me. It has been excellent. An awesome cruising bike. I should do a write up on it soon.

Off to a vineyard for lunch.

Thanks for reading my ramblings. Happy trails!

Davo

Naked Dutch Orange Picking - Rotovegas Lulz Trip

>> Saturday, December 19, 2009

The Vegas weekend had been eagerly anticipated. It turned out to be one of the best weekends for a long time. It was a good break from the Wellington climate. Even when it was raining it was warm. The traction on the flowy, well made trails was inspiring and even rank amateurs like us felt like XC (with some internet All Mountain) legends as we hooned around some of the best trails we had ridden.

Go get a cuppa.... Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin...

The cast:

Sharpie, Angry, Tiger, BGA, Rammer, Conners, Davo, Hayden, Goldie, Fastest Man (+ smokescreen, Mariska), Cabin, T-Rex and Hardman.

Old school comm's to save cell phone bills.

Space constraints meant Mono had to be aggressively packed.

Tiger's phone comes with a lame little pen.

We romped up on the Friday morning, via Macca's in Mana and Liquorice Cafe in Turangi (two lunches for worm-ridden Rammer) to arrive in Vegas ready to ride in the avo. Only Fastest Man, Mono and Al went riding. The remaining Spartan's bravado wore off immediately and after some wheelies and bike tests, we ate, drank and lulzed it up in the pools with some awesome macho challenges like one-legged long jump comps (win for Davo) and underwater swimming (well done Rammer).

Moar than one lunch is plain greedy

With Whacko still chasing young girls in Canada we needed a young courier who we could be sure would crash in front of us to provide the entertainment. Hayden didn't disappoint and pulled a stoppie to faceplant in front of the cabins during dinner. After dinner and removing gravel from Hayden, we hit the hotties and burned holes into naked dutch orange picker girls and their mums for a while, before hitting the hay.

Saturday dawned with a modest amount of drizzle and a lot of noise coming from cabin #5, as Hayden, BGA and Tigerbroner fixed each other's Morning Glory's. We met Cabin, Tim and Goldie at the Waipa carpark and hit the trails.

The trails were fantastic. Some of he guys are old hands in Vegas, but some had done very little, and it became abundantly clear why people make such regular pilgrimages up there. The trails were all well formed, had excellent features and flowed like a harpoon daily and nightly. We headed up to the top about three times, with the group mostly divided into the Guns and the Sweaty Pelaton.

Tigs rails the berm puling a mean little weasel face

"Tigs 1 to Tower, permission to do a fly by" - "Permission denied, Tigs 1".
Tigs does it anyway. Like Maverick FTW.

We did these trails:

Tahi, Creek, Piglet/Pig, up Katore Road to Gunna Gotta, then A-Trail, Tickler, up Direct Road (loose 4wd climb) then into Frontal Lobotomy, before more 4wd, to Tuhoto Ariki/Hatupatu (great trails, a rooty muddy contrast to the other trails), then back up to hit Billy T, then G-Rock and Roller Coaster. Up the hill once more to do Huckleberry Hound and Corners. Then we did Dragon's Tail before heading out.

We did lots of bike swaps which was cool. People took rides on Davo's rigid singlespeed and realised how hard he was. Davo rode people's fullys and realised just how easy it was. Everyone enjoyed sledding down the hills on the Stumpy (review coming).

Mr Ed rides Davo's SS - Davo insists it is 'Candy Copper' and not Ginger.

It started raining quite a bit and the trails changed, which was cool. Despite the mud the traction was still very good, unlike in Wellington. You don't have to allow for slick clay etc in Vegas, you just pin it like it was dry. Unfortunately Davo's wrists and rest of body were a bit rooted and he needed to get back to the hotties. Despite having moar left in the tank, the gathered strong men decided to pull the pin too and we cruised back for more pool lulz and after some contraband pool beers and a chat with zee Germans (regretfully the orange pickers were not there), we headed to Zippy's for tea.

The gay scene in Vegas was excellent.

On the way out we saw Fastest Man prepping his horse for the following morning's Mid N.Island Cup in Eskdale. Fastest Man would have won the race if it were not for a navigation fail within a snif of the finish line. So whilst mildly tragic, it was an awesome ride for someone who id 50kms the previous day and went out with us, geting only a few measly hours sleep. We watched him for cleaning tips. See how FM rep's his sponsors by wearing their hat for a photo op'.

We decided to walk. We each saved about $1 each and it took an hour and was very hot. And we got shot at my this Ned Kelly junior. Classic group decision fail.

After a Zippy's feast we headed to Lava Bar. After a leisurely couple of hours and a few jugs, the numbers of young blond tourists swelled considerably. The rugged old BLR womanisers spent some time coaching NoMiddleRing Richards, preparing him for a stab at a couple of the young Swedes. Sadly he was trumped by a local old man who came along and started showing them his naked fireman calendar. Unorthadox, but he was getting the digits, so full respect to the wrinkly guy.

Davo beat everyone at pool while the assembled cooing crowds watched our stick weilding and ball banging to the evergreen musical delights of N-sync, Back Street Boys and other mildly hetro 90's bands.

We finished the evening with a trip to our friend Alexandra's place. Alexandra had three good friends there who were a little more forward than we anticipated. We were a little out of place as we did't realise it was fancy dress. The girls there seemed to have no end of outfits and kept coming out dressed as nurses, cow girls, devils and such like. We were not accustomed to all this and after being given the good news as their inexpensive outfits fell off, we pleaded and paid them to put them back on. We made a very very hasty exit... after about 4 hours.

Sunday dawned and we headed out for a proper sifty ride and Conners worked his camera magic and later prepared our latest submission to the New World Disorder 13 video auditions. Cracking job Ben! We absolutely love your work. See how we make XC cool...

The Sunday sift was one of the highlights of the weekend and Mono served up a fine few trails to finish the weekend's biking. We stopped and jawboned a lot and took a few runs at some bits to capture some on the camera. The final descent of Rockdrop and Rose garden to the finish was superb. Tones and Davo even managed to man up for some slightly 'beyond XC' riding, including a log ride which was internet 3 meters high, and a huck which was internet 5 meters high.

Dave hucks off the 5 internet meter drop.

We did these trails on Sunday morning:

Rockdrop climb, then Grinder, Dipper, then Exit Trail, then the rest of Rockdrop, then Rosebank.

Angry's elbows are messed up. What a circus freak.

We got back, struck camp and hit the pools for more epic lulz in our bibs. The pool running race was a highlight. Not least of all because it captured BGA and Mono's awe-inspiring Big-O faces.

Rammer & Dave's mate, Stu Hardman joined us for the avo, and after moar Zippy's grub and coffee we headed to the Main Event - The Luge Grand Prix.

This was the most eagerly anticipated event of the weekend. Fiercely competitive men on small tea trays, hurtling down the hill.

A high speed finishing shunt puts Tigs in the water.

The gay scene at Skylines was at least as good at at the holiday park.

We did 5 rides. Mostly on the longer intermediete run. There were extreme shenangans and dangerous tactics as riders were nudged out and put sideways at full speed. Early rounds fell to Clive, Davo and Sharpie, but after a while being at the front held no win so anyone leading put the brakes on to get back into the thick of the action! The Luge was the most fun any of us had had in a very long time. Highly recommended for sure.

Then we returned home (via a traditional kebab in Bulls- v.good) to our beautiful smokescreens and/or adult website subscriptions.

An all time great weekend. Check out the photo album here.

Till next time. Happy trails and safe exploring over the Xmas holidays everyone.

Leonidas (BLR Press Sec).

Makara World Cup

>> Monday, December 7, 2009

Football has Wembley Stadium, Rugby has Twickenham stadium, Cricket has the MCG, but mountain biking has Makara Peak. It is at this hallowed turf that mountain bikers go into battle at the annual Makara Peak World Cup, Bushlove mounted a strong team to take on one and all.
First Round – Creek to Peak relay

Bushlove got off to a flying start with Angry bursting down the wing to be first into the single track. He proceeded to block the competition for as long as possible, before settling into a support role. BGA picked up the ball for Bushlove but was chasing the star player of Roadwork's T-Rex and Revolution’s Jonty. The game was close as half time rolled round. BGA and Slacky stayed on field for the second half, but Angry was substituted out for Tiger.

With fresh legs Tiger sprinted up the field, but his laces (aka drivetrain) came undone allowing Slacky to put his set piece in play for the final descent. BGA was coasting along, defending position when just before the half time whistle; Slackboy sprinted down the line as BGA dropped the ball.

Tiger rolled in with his laces still undone, to take the points with Angry for the M1 and M2 team class (what a shame there wasn’t this category at this tournament). Kah took the full back position for Bushlove and made sure there were no early exits from the field this week.

After the first round, it was podiums all round but no win yet for Bushlove. Revolution stole the early glory in the teams event with T-Rex the man of the match in the individual.

Between games, the players and supporters tucked into some yummy chocolates….

...and gingernuts

The grand final – Makara Peak Rally

Davo, who had been dropped for this tournament, revved the team up for the grand final. It was up to Mono and Mr Ed to lift the game and bring home the silverware.

Mono and Mr Ed got off to a good start; they were working well as a team. Even when Mr Ed almost got carried away down the Leaping Lizard line Mono made sure there were no rules broken and keep both of them in game.

Coming into the final crucial part of the game, they could see Alex Revell charging down the line towards them. Mr Ed and Mono stayed together and entered the final descent to the line together. They had a gap on Alex, but who would touchdown across the line? It was going to be close. Just before the line, Mr Ed dropped the ball just like BGA had done earlier in the tournament. Mono saw his chance for glory and charged across the line taking all the high fives and glory of the match winning move. It was glory for Bushlove, but Mono was the man of the match with his last minute heroics over Mr Ed.

The play of the day award goes to...

Rose and Jackson on the Tandem. If you thought Trickle Falls and Vertigo were hard, try riding it on a tandem!

It was a tough tournament, but Makara was the winner on the day. The Bushlove team would like to thank all the touch judges and umpires (aka volunteers), the awesome groundskeepers (aka track work parties) and of course those who made this tournament happen.

And of course: full credit to the opposition.

Bushlove words of wisdom: Why join a boring gym when you can get a workout with good sorts and make some more mint singletrack! Earn some track karma, join a work party!

Huka MTB Weekend - Some Other Titbits

We've heard in detail how our fine Spartan warriors, Sharpie and Slackshanks, got along last weekend at the Huka. But what of the other brave Bushies who went up for a romp around? Here are some quick factoids.

Tigerbroner: Rode well and ended up in a sprint with Jordini "Houdini" Blake. Tigs got put away by a foot for 10th and $100, but results now show Tigs and Jordan both out of the Top 10 :o( Good close racing between these two though. 4hr 07.43

Bennett: 27th in the Elite road race. He is a Good Roadie.

Ashley: Tough day in the office for Wonderwoman who enjoyed her ride and will no doubt be back to both break 6hrs and maybe find the dignity she lost when mooning everyone, or better still convince MJ to join her while the Boys, Smokescreens and Flamehaired Ladylovers gaze on. 6hr 01.56.

Al Crossdresser: Steamed into some trees and wotnot early on in the cut and thrust on the first few singletrack corners. Boxed him in a bit with some scrapes and an injured shoulder. Although it destroyed his flow, BGA sorted himself out and got back into the swing of things to finish, feeling pretty buggered, in a highly respectable 4hr 45.12.

Davo (Me): Racing in the 2 man singlespeed class, I got Silver and DFL behind local strongman, Carwyn May. Rode pretty well for a while but lost a bottle, dehydrated, got a headache. Rode a bit sluggishly to the 50km feed and downed a ton of water. Got my groove back on and dropped the hammer as best I could. My last 33kms was good. I rode pretty well but had to stop a couple of times to air up a slow flat rear tire. Better next time I hope. 4hr 20.17

Lots of other Wellington riders had good mornings in the saddle too. Stu Houltham won by a nose. Big Gav was in the mix. Cam Wood rode strongly as did Godfather Renall and The Painting Man, who put his gears to good use, pipping me by a minute or so. T-Rex didn't have the day he hoped and couldn't mix it at the front, but still scored a 4hr ride. MJ rode strongly and just pipped Lisa on time, with both lovely Wellington ladies finishing in a smidge over 5hrs.

A key event that needs moar attention was the Gaydar Contest, where Straight Trudi and Catherine ranked the assembled men on who was most likely to set off a Gaydar and get hit on in a gaybar. Results:

In other news we had a long night on the Saturday in some Taupo bar with cougars, Nicki, Rhonda and Megan, accompanied by cougar-in-training Amanda Jenkins. However they were massively trumped by the Elite Coug' who was hitting on everyman in the bar and pulled yours truly up to dance. I laid some drunken half forgotten salsa moves on her and she was suitably impressed. She said in a strong and unsexy accent "I am from Kazakhstan", "You know Borat?". I said yes but really made in into her good books when I asked her if she knew
Djamolidine Abdoujaparov. Although I failed on the country she knew him anyway.

I'm sure lots of other funny noteworthy things happened up there but I can't remember much else for some reason.

Next road trip - Vegas, baby, Vegas!

Fresh Meaty Shanks - Crosslings Join The Stupidity

>> Wednesday, December 2, 2009

After copious amounts of begging via phone, letter, email and telegram, from Mrs Crossling to HQ here in Sparta; a meeting was called in Bushlove HQ to debate the potential debutants.

The gathered warriors surmised that the men of Crossling did fit the bill - and the motion was passed. Much to the relief of their female relatives, who had come in from Masterton to pleasure us with stuffed vine leaves, wine and RJ's licqorice chocolate logs (sponsor us please), to help sweeten the deal.

Ed and Al bolster the Team's already diverse make up of Manscaping Metrosexuals's, Macho men, Ginger's, Kids, Asians's and Strippers; by adding a "Fastest Man" and a Strawberry Blonde.

Its great to have you on board men. Welcome to the stupidity and devoid of charm or meaning, Bushlove Racing Team.

The Ginger chin blows....

>> Tuesday, December 1, 2009

After swearing black and blue after riding round the lake 2 years ago that I would never to a ride that long again, I foolishly signed up for the Huka XL.
Foolish you say, But Slacky, your a god amongst men, your might is spoken of in hushed yet awed tones.
Ah yes, However I am afflicted with 2 things. 1, this accursed ginger chin (it's only the chin) and 2, Ankylosing Spondylitis. This is one of the many many many types of Arthritis. I manage this with diet, by not eating any starch, I don't get any pain or inflamation. However this diet is also at loggerheads with the nature of my chosen sport. Not being able to eat pie, pasta, chips, rice, grains and cereals, peanuts, root veges (spuds etc), and pretty much 7/8ths of a supermarket. It means I don't get to have lots of carbs stored in my body, blah blah technical terms, blah blah, and struggle to refuel energy wise, both during and after races or rides.

And over the last few years I've learned that my energy levels are good for 3 hr's max, and then it's all downhill from there.
So it was a given that I was gonna blow, just like BGA after a few drinks.

After one of the most awesome people in the world drove me up to Taupo (remember kids, it pays to suck up to your coaches) and Cam's whanau welcomed us on the Thursday night, we got down to the business of sleeping. I got to sleep in the dungeon right next to the wine cellar, we placed the airbed in such a fashion that Lisa woulda have to climb over me to get to the wine. Effectively saving the wine from being drunken by her.The next day we wondered into town to sign in and get food. Saw some nice stuff, harrassed a few people, bitched and moaned about the 7am start time. Thats way before I normally wake up every day. Went for a short pootle on the bike, thankfully checking out the first corner into the singletrack.
Race Day
Got up at a stupid time, slapped some bacon and eggs on the barbie for breaky, and got our shit together. After the toilet break, we headed down and warmed up, chatted to some DH legends, and Lester and Byron also.
Lined up and nearly immediatly Jon Bridges thrust his microphone at me. Not being as used to men thrusting things in my face as Davo is, I was a bit flustered, but managed to stammer out some words.
At the start, the local lead out guy got lost after the bridge, so we pretty much went whereever we wanted all over SH1. Then up the footpath, and away we went.
I let the front lot go, as I knew it would be a long day in the office and well they were just too fast. Saw Davo way off in the distance spinning like a madman near BGA and then presenting his buttocks for all and sundry. Davo likes to pretend this is his "tuck", but we know better.
Still nearly over cooked the first corner into the singletrack, but pulled it up in time. I could hear Davo bleating somewhere up in front about something. Think he had forgotten to turn the toaster off or something. Came upon a dazed BGA doing his usual picking himmself up off the ground after YET another crash gag. Asked him if he was gay, he wheezed out a "ÿep, all good".
Up a wee climb and into the descent, one of cabins young proteges decided his face needed exfoilating, so leapt off his bike and firmly rubbed his face along the ground. Next bit of track and someone else was falling over and blaming tires. As he was a bit flustered I gave him the good old you'll be thanking those tires later in the day. Hopefully he made it that far, cos he was sliding all over the place.
Into the craters and the tracks started to really suit me and I was feeling pretty good. Slowly pulled back Davo and a woodhill'en, we dropped him and I sat in behind Davo marveling at his "Shanks of Destruction". I tried to make him feel better by letting him get away on the tankstand and grinder climb while I ate some food. He had a 5 min gap at the top, give or take 4 mins, which I preceded to smash thru on the Debs descent, which was full of win. Pulled back onto his wheel as he fail walked up the 60k hill and then followed him into the singletrack. This turned out to be an epic fail on my behalf, as he seemed to be riding downhill slower than Kah. About halfway down, he let me passed and I put a 10 min gap by the bottom. I stopped for a natter at the wristband stop to let Davo catch up a lil bit, so he dind't feel so bad, and set off in front of him. WAs feeling really good, so stretched out a bit.
Up and down and all around. Had a blast thru the trails, but was gutted to see that they had taped off the seesaw. Pulled right onto the tail of the Ventanna guy I had been trailing and he obviously got a fright at the sight of a ginger chin behind him and put the hammer down. He stretched out on the climb, and I went down the fun descent doing all the drops having a blast. Near the top of the next next climb, Cam Durno and mono caught up. i let Cam past, and stuck to his wheel. We dropped Mono down the hill and put a 20 min gap on him. 3 mins later he caught up. I let those 2 go for a bit, but hopped back on there tail after the carpark. Cam fluffed a chain and so me and Mono rode thru the shittest trails in the world for the next 30 mins with Cam floating somewhere back there. Coming out of those and I gracisouly let them go, as i could feel my fufu valve fluttering.
Thru the helicopter pad and our feeder extrordinaire, Cams mum, gave me another bottle. Another ride flew past me like i was standing still and i was alone. Rode down to the rapids and dam with the fufu valve not really working at all well, and WALKED across the damm dam bridge. Still alone, and just plodding along as best possible, another dude flew past, then Ian P caught me at the top of the next climb. I followed at a discrete distance (read floundered some 30-50 meters back) and then let him go. Struggled up past Huka falls, ooooooooooh pretty, and then to the next walk. Apprently everyone else waws running, my 85 year old grandma could of beatean me along that wee walk. Davo came past and tried to hit on me, I told him I was already taken. At teh top of the next climb, Anika caught me. Ah ha, I can stick on her tail i thought. She rode away from me.
the trails seemed to go on and on and on and on and on, and on, then we went past the bungy, and the trails went on and on and on and on and on and on and on. I was feeling pretty nauseous at this point and emptier than a bucket of chicken at monos table in KFC. Then I rode past the poo ponds. I felt sicker.
Then the woodhill'en past me. I'm pretty sure he had a time machine, cos he leapt past me faster than Hinge can click Buy now in an online bike store. Across the bridge and the last bit home. Thorg thought I was waving hello to him as he walked back from the relay bus, I was asking for help, so he could push me to the finish line. Thankfully I managed on my own.
Crossed in 4:25 something, 2 mins up on Cam Wood.
Happy with how I went in the end, stoked I kept going even tho I had blown worse than Tony gives head.
Never let an illness dictate what you can and can't do. I should prolly listen to that myself more often, but no-one said ginger chins were smart.

The Gutbuster - The meatist race of the south.

With BLR’s one good roadie Angry off racing around Taupo and the rest of the team racing the associated rec ride I thought I better get out for a spin. After finding out about the Bannockburn Gutbuster I knew it would defiantly fit the bill. Basically it’s a 75km race from the thriving town of Garston (pop 12 people and a dog) across the Nevis range to Bannockburn. With 2 decent climbs up to 1300m it earned the reputation as the Meatist race in the south.

My day started with the drive from Queenstown where I was staying for the weekend to the finish at Bannockburn. Being a point to point race the organisers had arranged transport for the bikes (on a twin carriage truck) and riders (on a bus) to the start of the race at Garston, a two hour drive away. Waiting around for the start I noticed the difference to a NI race. There wasn’t a Santa Cruz in sight and a disproportionate number of as BGA would say strawberry blonds. Was pleased to see lots of riders on the wagon wheels including some fruity crabon stumpjumpers, superflys as well as some lovely niners.

The race started with a brief road section then on to a 12km 800m climb to the 1100m summit. The day had really warmed up without even a breath of wind so my choice of arm and leg warmers combined with the black bushlove kit wasn’t the smartest move. I found the heat really sapped my energy and I had trouble finding a decent rhythm. Also disturbing I was in my lowest gear a few km into a 75km race. After 40min of climbing I started to feel a little better and after maybe 10 false summits came strongly over the summit. A long fast gravel downhill to the valley floor followed where I must have reached speeds of up to 130 internet km/h. While not technical riding the beautiful valley flanked by the Remarkables and the Garvie mountains more than made up for that. Gradually sloping down over 25km with only the occasional river crossing to break it up a big ring would have come in handy. After the halfway point (where apparently you could stop for tea, coffee or soup) disaster struck in the form of a herd of cows. These weren’t any cows though they where South Island cows and much like South Island mountain bikers they’re harder than there North Island brethren. They even had fucking horns! Fortunately they had not yet been in communication with their Wellington posse so they let me pass unharmed. Otherwise the only issue I had was dropping my chain a handful of times due to a poorly adjusted chain guide on the 1x8.

The second climb climbed up 1300m to Duffers saddle from which there were amazing views of Bannockburn and Clyde. Despite feeling pretty spent managed to catch a couple of people on the climb to salvage some self respect. After this there was another epic gravel road downhill to the finish in Bannockburn. Crossed the line in 3:24 well back on the winners in 7th overall and 3rd open men but happy with my days work.

Overall I’d highly recommend the Gutbuster (and the rest of the Cromwell summer series). It’s an amazing part of the country with some great backcountry rides and interesting heritage. I look forward to exploring it a bit more in the future.

Rest of my weekend was pretty mint as well riding to Macetown on Sun morning then out to 7 mile delta (the venue for the ss nats for 2010) for some madcore hucks in the afternoon.

Huka Challenge - Sharpie's Victory Tales

After watching the Elite riders in Bushlove competing in the Huka XL (Tiger, Slacky, Wonderwoman and Dave Aldred) ride off in front of me while I was standing in the middle of SH1, I was keen to get into my work and chase them down. Unfortunately the punter race wasn't underway until about 3 minutes later, so it was gonna be a hard chase. I made good time up the first wee climb, clearing off from the pack behind me, in the hope I'd get through the traffic before the trails got too tight and twisty. Fail. After picking off a few people I kinda just settled into a fairly easy pace, and waited for 2nd place to ride up to me.

As it turned out, 2nd place at the time was Cam Durno - I'd had a great wee battle with Cam at the North Island Cup earlier this year, so I was glad to see him. We chatted for a good 10 minutes, catching up on each other's events, training, and finally talking bikes. Eventually I put a wee gap on him during a climb, and stayed away for a wee while. Once we hit the downhills he pulled me back - it was great for me to have a local to follow on the faster sections. We continued swapping places for the first 40km or so. Somewhere during this part of the race I pulled my Leppin out of my back pocket, opened the top and gave it a squeeze... nothing. I squeezed harder - still nothing. I had to stop, undo the lid and inspect the offending bottle. Turns out they're now using foil seals on the slingshot bottles, even when you buy them empty... odd.

Anywho, back to the riding. I yelled out when I caught sight of Davo in front of me on a climb - something must have gone wrong with his bike, cos he was walking and I was still in the big ring. Anyway, after a quick cup of the balls I carried on, and Cam and I continued our race within the race. Shortly after that I caught Slacky, and we rode together for a good 10km or so. During this part of the race I lost quite a bit of time - the trail was tight and twisty with lots of sharp accelerations. Not really suited to big wheels, and I was feeling a little flat which didn't help. Once we were out of that trail we were told "32km to go". Sweet. I knew the last part of the race included a good amount of easy fire road and 4wd track, so figured I'd be finished in under 90 minutes. Downed some more Leppin jism and carried on. Still had about half a bottle left from the 2 bottles I started with, so all going well on the fluid front.

"Bring out the gimp - But the Gimp's sleeping - Well you'd better go wake him up ftw"

After a blat out to SH1 near Wairakei we turned off the footpath and onto a gravel road. I came über close to making a farm purchase (Went unconditional, vendor pulled out at the last minute) when I got both wheels drifting sideways, and my right foot dragging along like an outrigger. Sweet move. Cam gapped me a bit, cos as I was trying not to crash my left quad got a twinge of cramp, so I got off for a quick stretch before I gave chase. What a girl.

Now we were on to the 4wd roads, and I had a good chance to really wind the big wheels up. I gained the ground back to Cam pretty quickly, then cruised at his pace for a couple of minutes. The 4wd track was interrupted by a couple of gates and a walk (!) section across the Aratiatia Damn itself. After that section I decided to put in a wee dig, to see how Cam was feeling... not great it seemed. I gave it the beans for a good few minutes, eased off a bit to look back only to see fresh air. Sweet. I knew I wasn't far from the finish, so kept smashing the 4wd tracks and taking any singletrack cautiously.

A few km from the end I saw a VIC Cycles rider in front, and assumed it was Gav. A couple of minutes later I caught sight of a Bushlove jersey - Tiger. I yelled at him and told him to hurry up. He informed me Jordan was just up the road, and that I'd catch him, so off I go. Sure enough, he was fast asleep as I blew by him. 5 seconds later he was no doubt awake, stuck to my rear wheel. He had a Tiger in tow as well. Crap. The last few km involved lots of sandbagging, attacking, sprinting and general tomfoolery - it was awesome fun. As we were approaching the final corner leading into the finish line a tourist bus started to pull out from the side of the road. Being safety conscious I slowed and pulled to the left, while the other 2 gassed it past the bus on the right to continue their battle - they were both in the XL race and riding for position, and I was just there watching after all. I rolled across the line feeling pretty fresh, in 4:04 ish or something for the 83km with about 3 minutes back to Cam.

Still a good chunk of time after the winner, but a fairly solid top 10 overall time from me, which I was fairly happy with given the lack of speed I've got at the moment - endurance is no worry, but I haven't done enough race pace stuff in recent months. Also, I was on a hardtail for the first time in a couple of months - I'd had 2 short rides on it before the Huka, and it worked out OK in the end in spite of my best efforts to do some mean crashes.

In the last few weeks I've rekindled my passion for racing, after being part of the winning Wild Wellington Relay team, having a decent race at the PNP race and having fun at the Huka. So, I've applied for my elite licence for the coming season, and hopefully I can get in amongst some good racing over the summer. :-)

Moar blogging on Taupo coming soon...
